The Nurse Manager (NM) is a professional nurse who holds twenty-four hour accountability for the clinical and administrative management of the Inpatient Psychiatric Unit (7 West), an acute inpatient psychiatric unit. The patient population includes a variety of complex mental health disorders (Schizophrenia, Depression, Bipolar Disorder, etc.), many of which are complicated by substance abuse and medical conditions. The Nurse Manager provides leadership in the delivery of care to psychiatric patient populations that require acute stabilization and management. The NM will direct the performance improvement, patient safety and patient experience programs on the unit. The NM will supervise and ensure the safe delivery of nursing care that is based on current evidence. This includes supervision of and staff development for all assigned nursing employees, health technicians and program assistants. The NM provides input into strategic planning activities and participates in meetings and interdisciplinary committees at the unit and service levels to improve care. Major duties include but not limited to: managing the patient care environment including budgeting, supplies, equipment and patients personnel management including scheduling, counseling and evaluation of staff staff orientation, continuing education and personnel development representing the department and unit within the organization direct patient care as needed data collection, analyzing, trending and reporting nurse sensitive indicators managing staffing process using VA Staffing Methodology and electronic staffing programs creating and advocating for a healthy work environment that is conducive to the recruitment and retention of highly competent nursing staff with diverse backgrounds monitoring the peer review process monitoring and ensuring compliance to TJC standards, other standards and policies responsible for all issues that affect nursing including standards of practice, credentialing, training, functional statements, position descriptions, proficiency reports, performance appraisals, policies, procedures, protocols and competencies collaborates with the interdisciplinary team in planning, directing and implementing patient care promoting the nursing service shared governance structure and the Journey to Excellence keeping staff informed of organizational goals through facilitating both vertical and horizontal communication in a timely manner providing direct supervision of nursing personnel in defined area of responsibility and evaluating performance and competency Work Schedule: Monday-Friday; 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Financial Disclosure Report: Not required Pay: Competitive salary, regular salary increases. Paid Time Off: Annual leave at the rate of eight (8) hours per biweekly pay period; Sick leave at the rate of four (4) hours per biweekly pay period; 10 paid Federal holidays per year. Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years' vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA. Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement).
