Incumbent functions as the Lead Health Technician assigned to Patient Escort Service within Patient Experience at the Seattle Division of VA Puget Sound Health Care System. Although the incumbent will serve as the Lead Health Technician, the primary mission is to transport patients, items, and equipment to and from various wards, clinics, ancillaries, and other components throughout the medical center. *Recruitment/Relocation Incentives may be authorized for a highly qualified candidate. Duties include but are not limited to: Distributes and balances the workload among staff in order to ensure timely processing and to ensure that each emp0loyee has enough work to keep busy. Reports on expected time of completion of work, and maintain records of work accomplishments and time expended. Prepares production reports as requested. Instruct employees in specific tasks and job techniques and make available written instructions and reference materials as necessary. Provides on the job training to new employees. Maintains current knowledge and answer questions of other employees on procedures, policies, directives, etc. Spot checks work in progress and assists in reviewing completed work to see that instructions, work sequences, procedures, methods, and deadlines are being met. Refers to the supervisor questions or issues not covered by standards and/or problems in meeting performance standards. Monitors work conditions such as seating, ventilation, lighting, safety, etc. May approve leave for a few hours or for emergencies. Will resolve simple, informal complaints to employees, but refer other situations to the supervisor. Reports to the supervisor on performance, progress and training needs of employees, as well as reports of behavior problems. Participates in performance-based interviews when seeking applicants to fill vacant positions. Independently sets up and manages dispatch operations; handles high number of calls using a digital phone with multiple rollover lines and promptly responds to such and attends to or assigns calls to other employees in escort service. Must have skill to keep calm and courteous with upset/irate callers. Memorize hospital premises layout (all wards, clinics, rooms, buildings, and outdoor areas). Transports visitors, patients, items, equipment, medication, and blood products to/from states areas throughout the medical center. Participates in patient searches when necessary. Coordinates the send out and receipt of patients and lodgers to/from the area nursing homes, hospitals, residences, inns, motels, etc. Regulates flow of wheelchairs and stretchers to clinics, wards, and ancillaries throughout the medical center. Transports decedents to the morgue and parks bodies in walk-in refrigerator; removes bodies from refrigerator and assists nurses with the preparation of decedents for viewing by family, friends, or authorized others. Assists in the draping of the American Flag over decedents, returns properly folded flag to appropriate destination. Perform wall-to-wall inventory and follows proper procedures for reporting inventory.
