The Medical Oncology department at Parker Adventist Hospital serves oncology and medical patients in our 32 beds. Our patient mix is general medical patients; about 90-95% of our population (sepsis, pneumonia, encephalopathy, cellulitis/wounds, altered mental status, diabetes, GI bleeding, kidney disease, infectious diseases, neutropenia, respiratory diseases, heart failure, and more) and 5-10% cancer patients (usually leukemia, lymphoma, brand new diagnosis, etc.), and most cancer patients start here with induction chemotherapy. Our unit is a fast-paced environment with lots of admissions and discharges happening. Some patients may stay in our department for an extended length of time, and we can develop strong relationships with them. Our department is friendly, fun, and teamwork focused with many comraderies; we gather as families outside of work and are a big family at work. We operate with a small-town feel, and individuals can build their foundation here, where they will be supported in pursuing other career opportunities. This is a great unit to build your foundation in nursing, a wonderful place to see and learn it all. This department is excellent for newly licensed nurses as a starting point in their career journey.
