The Cincinnati, OH VA Medical Center is seeking a Physician to serve as Chief, Surgical Service at our facility. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Physical Requirements: Per VA Directive and Handbook 5019 - a physical examination will be conducted based on the physical requirements of the position. Works cooperatively with other Service Chiefs, medical center management, and both clinical and administrative employees to move the center and network toward achieving their stated mission, goals and objectives in patient care, education, and research. Duties and Responsibilities of the Chief, Surgical Service: Coordinates the work of each clinical and administrative staff member on Surgical Service so that it is integrated into the work of the service. Ensures that the work of Surgical Service is integrated into the primary functions of the medical center. Coordinates education functions of his/her service with the education programs of the medical center in conjunction with the ACOS for Education Encourages and supports research efforts at the medical center, whether performed by members of his service of where his/her service's participation is required for success. Develops and implements both service-level and center-level policies and procedures that guide and support the delivery of services by Surgical Service to the rest of the medical center and network. Keeps center management, his/her peers and service staff informed of events and changes in his/her Service, medical school department or medical specialty that may have significant impact on the center operations or mission. Keeps Surgical service staff informed of changes at the medical center that impact on their work and environment. Acts as the liaison between the VA medical center and his/her academic department at the University of Cincinnati School of Medicine. Provides oversight of the appointment, credentialing, privileging, and re-privileging of departmental faculty members assigned to the VA medical center in Staff, WOC, contract, or C&A positions. Keeps the Chief of Staff and other appropriate department members informed about VA regulations, procedures, events or other Service or VA medical center matters that may have significant impact on his/her medical school department or its faculty members who work at the VA medical center.
